UNO Social Clubs to be a Popular Destination for Fun and Games
It enjoys the enviable status as the most popular card game in the world. And no, it’s not Blackjack or even Poker. It’s UNO. And a resurgence in its popularity is giving rise to “UNO Social Clubs” and UNO-themed décor slated for Las Vegas resort suites this summer.
The easy-to-learn, fast-paced brainchild of Mattel has sold over 150 million copies worldwide and boasts 99% brand awareness, according to the card game’s maker.
UNO benefits from the “Game Night” trend which gained traction across the nation during the COVID pandemic, as lockdowns forced consumers to find forms of indoor entertainment beyond screen time. Yet even after the pandemic, the Game Night trend stuck around, only this time social groups could gather in or out of each other’s homes to enjoy the activity together.
Mattel, a leading global toy manufacturer responsible for such iconic successes as Barbie, American Girl, and Hot Wheels, is capitalizing on the Game Night trend by operating UNO themed social clubs designed to keep their star card game in the spotlight.
The tabletop gaming culture has seen consistent growth, thanks in large part to a younger demographic. The global tabletop gaming market is expected to exceed $34 million by 2030, and Mattel aims to keep UNO relevant in the midst of a competitive market.
The first of the UNO social clubs will be unveiled at the Palms Casino Resort in Las Vegas this July, where consumers can enter to win a stay in the UNO suite, decked out in card colors of red, green, yellow, and blue. More venues will be added throughout the year to the UNO social clubs, with pop-up events that will include themed drink menus, photo opportunities, and tournament style game play.
In 2023, UNO fever was so high that an estimated 60 decks were sold every minute. Always seeking to maintain interest in the game, Mattel produces variations, such as UNO Golf, UNO Teams, and UNO Show ‘Em No Mercy, which will be showcased in the Las Vegas suite.
While the in-person social experience is of greatest emphasis, Mattel’s marketing campaign also has a strong digital element. For a chance to win a stay at the Las Vegas UNO suite, fans are encouraged to post a video using a special TikTok filter along with the hashtags #UNOSocialClub and #MattelContest – a move also intended to drive media engagement.
UNO has definitely outlived any label as a passing fad, and the next generation has taken up the baton. What can marketers glean from the timeless appeal of this pastime? Keep reading here.
