Pickles are Having a Cultural Moment

The fermented veggie is making a comeback—or finally having its day. In anticipation of International Pickle Day on May 16th, pickle products are popping up everywhere.

From pickle Mimosas, to pickle smoothies, to pickle beer, and even pickle flavored lip balm and lip gloss, it seems everyone is getting in on the food world’s hottest trend.

Pickle popularity is indeed on the rise. Gen Z and younger millennials are reportedly the drivers of the trend, a demographic that particularly enjoys snacks designed around the fermented cucumber. Chex Mix Spicy Dill Snack Mix and Slim Jim Vlasic Dill Pickle Snack Size Meat Sticks are among pickle curated products filling shelves nationwide.

Smoothie King is taking the trend seriously. The company’s vice president of R&D and product marketing, Lori Primavera, says it’s not just about a fad, but also about nutrition that tastes good—a tenet she says is at the core of every Smoothie King offering.

“Pickles are not only delicious and having a cultural moment,” she said, “they also offer real nutritional benefits, and are especially known for their enhanced hydration.” She said this unique combination gave Smoothie King the perfect opportunity to “explore (pickles) in a new format and push our innovation into new territory, reimagining how a beloved flavor can deliver both function and taste.”

It’s undeniable the pickle has its place as a healthy addition to our diet. It boasts antioxidants, fiber, vitamins, and its fermented nature adds probiotics to the list, enhancing gut biome. It’s also especially hydrating, containing naturally occurring electrolytes and minerals such as potassium and magnesium.

The global market for pickles and related products is undergoing a time of dynamic growth, consistent with a rising appreciation for fermented foods. In the US alone, the pickle’s market share of $12.5 billion is projected to continue its surge, and is estimated to reach $18.75 billion by 2033.

Smoothie King’s product blends real Grillo pickles into its new summer drink that the company says will deliver “a refreshingly tangy taste…packed with electrolytes to help support hydration all summer long.”

Mark Luker, Grillo’s chief commercial officer, said those willing to try the product will be “pleasantly surprised (and hydrated) given the functional benefits of pickles.”

In 2023, Gen Z TikTok videos took the pickle viral. The trend seems to have endured. Is the pickle’s popularity a social media quirk or a real vested interest in long term healthy snacking?
