Ads Arrive In ChatGPT’s Free Tier As OpenAI Reshapes Its Business Model
In a move that signals a major shift for the artificial intelligence industry, OpenAI has announced it will integrate ads into ChatGPT. The decision marks the end of a purely ad-free era for the platform’s free and lower-tier users.
While the “Plus,” “Pro,” “Business,” and “Enterprise” tiers will remain ad-free, the company is looking to monetize its massive free user base to offset staggering infrastructure costs. OpenAI confirmed that users under 18 will not see ads, and the company will omit ads from sensitive topics including mental health, general health, and politics.
OpenAI is working to head off privacy concerns that can follow ad integration. In a recent corporate blog post, the company pledged that private conversations will not be sold to advertisers.
“We need to keep a high bar and give you control over your experience so you see truly relevant, high-quality ads—and can turn off personalization if you want,” the statement read. The company also reaffirmed its commitment to maintaining a premium, ad-free product for paying subscribers.
Testing is scheduled to begin within the next few weeks. To maintain the integrity of AI-generated content, OpenAI states that ads will appear at the bottom of the interface and will be “clearly labeled and separated from the organic answer.” Users can report irrelevant ads or inquire why a specific advertisement was served.
The transition follows reports from CNBC that OpenAI has entered into massive infrastructure and computing agreements to keep pace with global demand. CEO Sam Altman, once a vocal skeptic of the advertising model, addressed the pivot on X (formerly Twitter).
“It is clear to us that a lot of people want to use a lot of AI and don’t want to pay,” Altman posted, “so we are hopeful a business model like this can work.”
The platform’s scale is difficult to overstate. According to SemRush data, ChatGPT has grown from its initial launch to a staggering 5.2 billion monthly visitors.
The ad announcement follows a decade of rapid structural evolution. Founded in 2015 as a non-profit by a cohort including Sam Altman, Elon Musk, and Peter Thiel, the entity moved to a “capped-profit” model in 2019.
The final transformation took place in October 2025, when the organization reorganized as OpenAI Group PBC—a Public Benefit Corporation. This new structure allows the company to pursue profit while maintaining a legal mandate to create a positive impact on society. The company’s most recent valuation is estimated at $500 billion.
