RentAGrandma.com was the brainchild of Todd Pliss of Los Angeles, a former tutor to celebrities like the Jonas Brothers. He developed the idea while hearing so many parents complain about unreliable babysitters, and recognized an opportunity. He realized the maturity and life experience of older women would be a big plus to the babysitting industry. At the same time, the model provides job opportunities for older women.
The marketing concept caught on. Grandmothers have years of experience raising children, are more prone to engage in activities with them, and are generally considered trustworthy and reliable. And as the agency advertises, they “won’t text or tweet while they’re watching your kids.”
Within its first year, RentAGrandma had approximately 50 active caregivers in the Los Angeles area, and the company began franchising after benefiting from early media attention, including a feature on FOX News. The following year, Pliss took his budding business to Shark Tank, hoping to secure funds for a nationwide expansion.
While the investors ultimately passed on his proposal, citing concerns over scalability and profit margins, RentAGrandma has continued to operate and expand, growing to over 300 providers across the US.
In practice, caregivers are not required to be actual grandmothers, but they must be over age 50 and pass careful screening and background checks – including criminal history, previous employment, driving records, and personal interviews with past employers – so RentAGrandma can ensure you get a well vetted helper.
Services have expanded to include senior companionship, pet sitting, and household help like light cleaning and cooking. RentAGrandma also offers tutoring to children. Caregivers can use their special skills or areas of expertise. A retired teacher can tutor students. An animal lover can focus on pet sitting assignments.
Run like a staffing agency, the company continues to capitalize on the grandma archetype, with slogans like “Always trust your Grandma.” An app was created to make finding grandmas easier. The company also teamed up with Angie’s List to get the word out, and with senior centers to find interested and qualified grandmas.
The “grandmas” have been well received. Families report having learned “life lessons” from their caregivers. The grandmas benefit, too. One caregiver shared, “I feel young again, surrounded by children’s laughter.”
