Extreme Marketing: Is Managing Stress a Mission Impossible?

Posted by

If you think you’ve had a stressful day, it can’t possibly be as bad as Tom Cruise’s in the upcoming final installment of Mission Impossible, where he’s jumping buildings, running for his life, and literally dangling from an airplane.

Enter stunt footage of his fictional character Ethan Hunt in the Final Reckoning, with a tagline that warns, “The following stunts may cause a temporary stress response.” Never mind experiencing stunts like this. For most of us, the stress level skyrockets just by watching it unfold on screen.

Which is precisely how health tech company Oura Health wants you to feel. Oura Health has partnered with Paramount Studios to design an ad campaign promoting their stress-relieving product, the Oura Ring.

Ads are built around footage of extreme stunts with Tom Cruise from the popular movie series. The 15- and 30- second spots convey the notion that, if it works for Tom in situations as stressful as this, it can work for you.

Oura’s smart ring device works by measuring biometric data throughout the day such as heart rate, body temperature, and blood oxygen levels, providing insights for users into when and where stressful occasions are occurring during their day, and how their body is responding to them.

This information is designed to help wearers better understand how to potentially improve their exposure to stressors as well as their reaction and resilience toward it. Nighttime features also monitor sleep patterns and light or deep sleep stages like REM. All this data is available at your fingertips by wearing the ring.

“Tom Cruise: sprinting through Prague, clinging on an Airbus, scaling the world’s tallest building in Dubai, leaping across London rooftops, and riding a motorcycle off a cliff in Norway. All highly stressful,” noted Oura’s CMO, Doug Sweeney, on a post for LinkedIn. “Luckily, tracking your daily stress with URA isn’t impossible.”

The ads will run in the time leading up to The Final Reckoning’s release, in front of national audiences like the NBA semifinals, the PGA championship, and aptly, during the season finale of Survivor. Ads will also run on digital OOH locations and social media platforms.

Will bringing in the big guns like Tom Cruise get consumers excited about managing stress with the Oura Ring?
