Smile, you’re on Candid Catmera!
If you’re a cat owner, and you’ve always wanted to know what your kitty is up to when you’re not at home, now is your chance to find out. A new app designed for cat lovers is more than just a webcam—it actually lets your cat take “selfies.”
Designed by Brooklyn-based Current Studios, Candid Catmera uses custom cat facial recognition technology to snap photos of cats when they come near your device, and sends you a message to let you know. The app lures the cats in with looping animations featuring mice, fish or treats.
Available for iOS in the iTunes store, $1 of each $1.99 purchase price benefits the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA).
“We’ve been challenged a few times to create tech that recognizes pets and our team wanted to create an algorithm that only recognized cats,” says Current Studios VP of creative technology, Steve Martell. “We thought it’d be fun and a chance to give back to an organization that we believe in.”
Does this mean a K9-Cam app is on the way too? Not exactly.
“Dogs are significantly harder than cats,” says Current president Nathan Kroll. “There is no shortage of cat pictures on the internet, making it easy for the app to identify various breeds as they approach the screen so it can begin taking pictures. For dogs, their faces have a very wide range of looks. Just think how different a Great Dane looks compared to a Pug.”
